Hawking, 76, published A Brief History of Time in 1988, and the book has sold more than 10 million copies and has been translated into 40 languages. The Daily Mail wrote in 2006 that the scientist estimated how much he could have earned for the book, and that he had "made more money than any other book."
That same year, Hawking and his second wife, Ellen Mason, divorced after 11 years of marriage. The couple shared a 6.6 million chat-style home in Newham, an expensive part of Cambridge, Vanity Fair reported, but did not disclose the terms of their divorce settlement.
Career: Hawking has had success with several books on popular science, in which he generally discusses his theories and kinesiology. His book, A Brief History of Time, was a best-seller in 237 weeks. Hawking received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the largest civilian award in the United States.
